He Started It by Samantha Downing

Just a Few Words: WOW. Simply WOW. Samantha Downing did it again!
Reason I Chose to Read this Book: I absolutely loved her last book, and couldn’t wait to read something else by this author.
He Started It by Samantha Downing is a psychological thriller.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Berkley, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
Eddie, Beth and Portia are taking the same cross-country road trip that their grandfather took them on when they were children. They have him with them on this trip as well, although this time he is in an urn. In order for each to inherit their millions, they have to visit all the places they did on the original trip. Although someone is missing, Eddie’s new wife Krista, and Beth’s husband Felix are along for the adventure.
It’s been a long time since they’ve all been together. Long enough that even the brother and sisters don’t really know each other any more.
Sometimes it’s hard to be cooped up in a car with family day after day. Add to that the fact that everyone is keeping secrets. Then there is the black truck that seems to be following them, the fact that they don’t really trust each other, and the fact that the past seems as fresh now as it was 20 years ago.
I was so afraid that the hype for this book (mostly my own anticipation), would be for naught. It was not. This book was soooo good, soooo entertaining, and soooo much fun.
Let’s follow the family from hell. A very dysfunctional family. They all lie, they all scheme, and they are all controlling and greedy. Trust no one. The characters are wonderfully crazy in their own way, although some not as much as others. Although it is difficult to really like any of the them (living or dead), I found myself taking sides from time to time, and then changing sides the next minute. Sometimes I just wanted to “slap them silly”. Beth was a conundrum, Eddy a little mean, and Portia a bit sneaky. Although the story is told from Beth’s perspective, we still got to see everyone’s side.
The road trip was entertaining, especially since the author used real (if strange) stops on the map. A couple of them I wouldn’t mind checking out myself!
It seemed to start out a little slow, but eventually I couldn’t put it down, but I’m not sure when I realized that. The plot was really compelling, and the twists surprised me. Even when some of it was fore-shadowed, I got it wrong. I guess I was expecting the dead to rise up and take control….it was that kind of book.
Bottom line, I loved it!

“I’d give him a bunch of sleeping pills,” … “He’d just die in his sleep, never knowing he wouldn’t wake up.” I still think that’s the best way to kill someone. No sense in making a bloody mess.“
“Seriously, what was the deal with your grandfather?”
“The blade grazed his stomach, slicing his shirt open, but the wound didn’t kill him. The next nineteen did.”
