The 6th Target by James Patterson (with Maxine Paetro)
The 6th Target by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro is, of course, the 6th book in the Women’s Murder Club mystery series.
Consisting of Police Sargent/Lieutenant Lindsay Boxer, Medical Examiner Claire Washburn, Lawyer Yuki Castellano and Reporter Cindy Thomas, the Women’s Murder Club generally come together after-hours to solve the crime of the day. This time, they don’t actually work together, as they all have their own issues to deal with.
It starts with Medical Examiner Claire being shot by Fred Brinkley while on a ferry. Claire will be fighting for her life. When Brinkley turns himself in to Lindsay, it will be Yuki’s job to prosecute. Unfortunately, it may be hard to prove that he is sane enough to be found guilty. Or is he fooling everyone? Cindy is busy with her new apartment, and the fact that there may be a killer living in her building. Lindsey has moved passed Brinkley, and is now trying to find the kidnapped five-year old daughter of Cindy’s boss at the newspaper. Why is there no ransom demand?
Meanwhile, Lindsay is also having some problems with both her job and her boyfriend. Getting things sorted out will be an emotional battle.
There is a lot going on in this book, between the shooting, the trial, the kidnapping, the apartment menace, and Lindsay’s issues. It all comes together, and although it isn’t hard to keep up, something was missing. I think a lot more could have been done with the trial, which I found really interesting. Although Patterson’s short fast chapters keep the suspense building, in the end, there wasn’t much excitement. As well, I don’t think there was much in the way of character development in this book. I may also be getting a little frustrated with Lindsay’s indecisiveness regarding both her job and Joe. I like Claire.
All that being said, I’m still reading and reviewing the series.
