Messenger by Lois Lowry (#3 The Giver)

Messenger (The Giver, #3)

Messenger by Lois Lowry

Published:  2004

Messenger by Lois Lowry is the 3rd in The Giver Series.

This novel truly ties the first two books together.

We are re-united with Jonas (now known as Leader), where he is living in “Village”, and seems to be a bit of a librarian.   We again meet Christopher (now known as the Seer), who, although blind, can “see beyond”.   The main character in this book is Kira’s young friend Matty, who wants to be known as Messenger.  He has a special bond with the forest, and has never been injured there, and so he often travels from one village to another bearing information or supplies.  Others that travel in the forest are often injured (warned), and if they enter a second time, they die.  The village has been a very peaceful oasis for many who have been shunned by others for having disabilities.  But now there is a “market”, where people can trade anything.  It is changing the people, and therefore the village.  When the people decide to close the borders and not accept anyone new, Seer asks Matty to go ask his daughter Kira to come before it is too late.   Now even the forest turns against them.  But Matty has a gift.

The characters in these books grow, and get richer as the series goes on.  It shows what can happen when greed intrudes….and when strength and love prevail.
