Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James is an adult romance series.  Some would say it’s soft porn.  Others would say it’s a crime.

Now, it appears you either hate the series or love the series.  There does not seem to be any middle ground on this one.   I think some people just dislike it because they think they should.  A lot of people think that a man hitting a woman, even if they both find pleasure in it, is wrong.   On a personal level, I cringe at that myself.  However, on a story level,  I found the series very good, and although I am not into romance novels and I’m not fond of pain,  this series has both.   Let’s remember.  It is a story.  It is fiction.

A 21-year old college student (Anastasia Steele), interviews a young entrepreneur (Christian Grey).  The attraction is immediate, and two-way.  Unfortunately, Christian Grey’s form of pleasure is a little extreme for an innocent like Anastasia.   He is into bondage and whipping…  She is a virgin.  He tries to back away from her, but finds he can’t.  They are drawn to each other.  They want different things.  She wants a relationship.  He wants her to sign a contract.

Christian has never known anyone like Anastasia.  But his background, his past, his other women do not make a “normal” relationship easy.  He has never had a normal relationship.  Never.  He is used to being in control, everything done his way, where and when he says so, in both his business and love life.  Anastasia is messing with that.   She will not put up with being told what to do, when she can do it, and who she can have as a friend.  She wants her independence, and aims to have it.

What will they do to make this work?

So yes, the story is about bondage and S&M and crazy stuff (my opinion).  I actually didn’t find the sex scenes offensive so much, as intense.  (I’ve cringed at fight scenes between two men more than this).  The story is also about friendships, and love, and healing, and making a relationship work.  It is about two people who love each other.  This series is not for everyone.  But for me, it was pure entertainment.
