I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced by Nujood Ali and Delphine Minoui

This is the story of Nujood, one of 16 children by her father’s first wife.  She has no birth certificate,  but she thinks she’s 10.  Her sister Jamila was raped by another sister’s husband, and Jamila ended up in prison for adultery.  Her father sold Nujood to her future husband for roughly $750.  This is the story of a child. A young Yemeni child who was forced to marry a man three times her age.  It is the story of her abuse at his hands and others. It is the story of over-population and poverty.

With the help of an advocate and the press, Nujood won her freedom.  You would think this would be a feel-good book.  It is not.  It is a sad look at what is happening in the world, and how bad some children have it.  It is a never-ending battle.

Now, on the matter of the writing.  Nujood, at age 10 was barely literate.  So the book is basically written by journalist Delphine Minoui.   Most of the time they are Delphine’s words, and then translated from French to English.  Sometimes you wonder whose story it is.  I didn’t like the way that was handled.  There was enough publicity about Nujood at the time of the writing to know it was a true story, but somehow it lost its strength in the re-telling.  Perhaps if they had waited for Nujood to be old enough to write her own story….
