This book alternates between two stories. The first is in the 1920’s and tells the story of a stone cutter who falls in love with the bosses daughter (who is a rather ambitious/spoiled child).
In modern day Fjallbacka, Sara, a 7 year old child is found in a fishing net, murdered. The parents have been going through their own problems, and the grandmother Lilian is an antagonistic woman who has a never-ending feud going on with the neighbour Kaj. She is sure that his autistic son Morgan is to blame for the death of her granddaughter.
Patrik Hedstrom, lead detective in this case, is also dealing with his newborn daughter and her rather depressed mother at home. Erica of course, knew Sara and her mom, so more insight into the family dynamics was obtained through her.
We also find out that Anna (Erica’s sister) may be stronger than she has appeared thus far.
It took me quite some time to figure out how the two stories would mesh!
The cast of characters in this book is interesting…each has their own little quirks. Sometimes sad, but often comical, the book is highly entertaining…and leaves me wanting the read the next in line
